Ledley making progress in bid to prove Euro 2016 fitness

Joe Ledley has been doing some light ball work in Wales training as he aims to make their Euro 2016 squad despite suffering a broken leg this month.

The Crystal Palace midfielder sustained a fractured fibula during a 2-1 win over Stoke City but was still named as part of Chris Coleman s 29-man squad for a pre-tournament training camp in Portugal.

And he has taken another impressive step in his attempt to prove his fitness before Coleman cuts his squad to 23 for what is Wales first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.

Coleman said: Joe has done as much as anyone to get us there and he s important to us on the pitch and off the pitch. He s just a top lad.

That s the biggest decision I m going to have to make in the 23. It s not like I m thinking if…

Fluminense

From reigning supreme in the Southern Emisphere following an empathic win of the Copa Libertadores in 2023 to the bottom of the Brazilian Serie A table, Fluminense s fall resembles a horror movie script. Although the hosts were a force to be reckoned with Worldwide just a year ago, the financial problems dropped the team to the bottom of the pit.

Atlanta United v Minnesota United: Five Stripes not concerned by winless run

Atlanta United are not concerned by their winless run in MLS, so says Caleb Wiley.

The Five Stripes have not won in four MLS games, ahead of a home meeting with Minnesota United on Saturday.

Wiley, however, believes Atlanta’s attacking play has been such that it is only a matter of time until results start turning.

“It will come,” said Wiley. “We are creating so many chances. I know it is frustrating, but the goals will come. We are not worried because we have the talent to do that [score goals].

“We know that it is still early in the season. We still have a lot more games to go. We have so much more to learn. That is what we are all excited about; that is what I am excited about for this team. We have so much more to do, and to show everybody.…

Brentford defeat ´my worst game as a coach´, says O´Neil

Gary O Neil believes Wolves 5-3 defeat against Brentford was his worst game as a coach as the visitors remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

Nathan Collins second-minute header was cancelled out by Matheus Cunha soon after, only for in-form Bryan Mbeumo to put the Bees in front from the penalty spot.

Jorgen Strand Larsen levelled the game once again, but the hosts then raced into a 4-2 lead by the break thanks to efforts from Christian Norgaard and Ethan Pinnock.

The final two goals of an enthralling encounter came in the closing stages, with Fabio Carvalho scoring Brentford s fifth before Rayan Ait-Nouri netted a late consolation.

Wolves are now winless in their first seven games of the 2024-25 Premier League season (D1 L6), their w…

Qatar could share 2022 World Cup matches – FIFA

It will be up to Qatar to decide if they want to share 2022 World Cup matches with neighbouring countries, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke announced on Thursday.

It s Qatar who must express their wish and it will be Qatar who will make the decision in the first instance. Qatar must decide and then seek the authorisation of the (FIFA) executive committee, said Valcke, who is in Abu Dhabi ahead of this weekend s Club World Cup final.

We have bids like those of Spain and Portugal (for the 2018 World Cup), with a well-defined distribution of matches, and others where it is less so.

In the weeks to come an agreement will be signed between the local organisers and FIFA and more details can be determined.

Frimpong eyes 2012 comeback

Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong said he is eyeing a return at the start of next Premier League season after undergoing knee surgery.

The midfielder who had been on-loan at Wolves suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the clash with QPR last weekend which has ruled him out for the remainder of this season.

The Ghanaian has now had an operation on his right knee and hopes he can once again return from a serious injury after experiencing the same damage to his left knee in 2010.

The 20-year-old told Footy-Ghana: I had my surgery today (Wednesday) and I m happy everything went well.

I understand it is going to be a long layoff but I have proved I can come back from a big injury as I did the last time.

I hope to get back playing fo…

Euro 2020 data dive: Impressive Italy march on, Switzerland made to wait

Italy wrapped up a wonderful Group A campaign on Sunday as they overcame Wales 1-0 in Rome.

Rio 2016: What happened with the rules? – Falcao fumes at Kenny gold

Jason Kenny delighted Team GB fans by winning a sixth career Olympic gold medal on Tuesday, but the controversy in the keirin final caught the ire of Monaco striker Radamel Falcao.

Kenny etched his name among the pantheon of British Olympic greats when he matched Chris Hoy s national record of six gold medals by sealing victory in contentious circumstances in the velodrome.

The race had to be restarted twice, and on the first instance Kenny was faced with the threat of disqualification for overtaking the derny bike before it left the track.

However, the 28-year-old was cleared of wrongdoing and, after a failed second attempt, Kenny finally took the win ahead of Matthijs Buchli of the Netherlands and Malaysian Azizulhasni Awang.

But Falcao, who is well k…

Euro 2008 round one, Who’s HOT and who’s NOT, volume 1!

Day four of the Euro 2008 tournament saw Russia lose 4-1 to Spain and defending champions Greece lose 2-0 to Sweden.

Spain looked very impressive with a hat-trick from David Villa and a late goal from substitute Cesc Fabrigas. Russia were really not in the game at all and scored only a consolation through Roman Pavlyuchenko.

I don t want to sound anti-Greek but the talk before the tournament was that they would be more expansive than they were in 2004. They weren t. They were very, very, very boring. I didn t mind who won but I cheered when Sweden scored!

With the first round of matches completed it is time to look at who is hot and who is not, so far in the competition. We will revisit this after each round of matches and the quarter-finals, semi-finals and f…
